Microfranchise Toolkit

Jason Fairbourne, Director of BYU’s Microfranchise Development Intitiative, along with thirteen other authors have recently published a book that is a must for anyone interested in the concept of microfranchising. The book is called “The Microfranchise Toolkit, How to Systemize and Replicate a Microfranchise.” This toolkit will appeal universally from microfranchisors who want to start new business in developing countries to micro business owners. Topics include things as basic as customer service, as significant as funding and as vital as writing an effective franchise agreement.

Social Venture Plan Competition

Congratulations to ýStudents for Self-Sustainable Schoolsý for winning the BYU Social Venture Competition. This social business plan competition each year awards prizes up to $50,000. Students are encouraged develop their own plan or work with nonprofits and businesses to submit social business plans in a variety of fields including: health care, poverty, education, energy, agriculture, etc.

2008 ESR Conference

Jot the dates of this yearýs ESR Conference into your calendar today. The conference will be held on 6-7 November, 2008. As with the past few years the conference is being held on a Thursday and Friday with the Social Innovator Banquet on Thursday evening. The conference continues to be a great opportunity to stay abreast of the latest issues in economic self-reliance as well as being a great venue for networking and connecting with other development practitioners, researchers, and sponsors.

Coalition for Single Mothers Established

One of the objectives of the Single Mom Initiative (SMI) is to build a network of people and organizations that care about single mothers. The SMI believes that by facilitating a network of practitioners, organizations will be able to learn from each other, share resources and ideas, improve practice, and possibly engage in collaborative action to support single mothers.
